A sketchbook measuring slightly under 5" x 7". The book contains 24 leaves (48 sides), almost all of which have sketches on them. The cover of the book and one of the sketches are signed “Tim Martin.” The sketches are undated but from internal evidence (the names of popular songs written on the inside back cover) the book was used sometime after 1968. Some of the drawings depict African American people and therefore it's possible the artist himself was African American. The quality of the art is remarkable. The pictures are powerful and evocative, and they demonstrate the artist's command over a variety of styles. Please see the examples shown in photographs. The sketchbook is used and the covers are worn. In addition to the drawings shown, the book contains many unfinished studies and various notes in pencil. The pages are well-preserved and suitable for conservation and framing. We reached out to two artists named Tim (or Timothy) Martin; neither could identify these drawings as his own. However, Tim Martin is a common name and there are apparently other artists with that name. And even if the creator of this sketchbook did not ultimately become a famous artist, the sketches show a unique talent. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
