On April 16, 1960, the Air Self-Defense Force established the Aerial Maneuver Research Group at the 1st Air Wing, Hamamatsu Air Base, and an aerobatic flight team using F-86F Sabers was formed under the name of Tenryu. This team, using F-86F Sabers, later changed its name to Blue Impulse, using the call sign "Impulse Blue," and became known throughout the world for its aerial depictions of the Olympic rings and Expo '70. After that, the team performed many aerobatic flights all over Japan, but in the 1982 season, the baton was passed to the T-2, a domestically produced jet trainer aircraft, which replaced the aging F-86F. The T-2's speedy aerobatic flight attracted many fans. After using the F-86F and T-2, the Blue Impulse team switched to the T-4, the latest model of purely domestic jet trainer aircraft, in the 1996 season.
